When Life Starts Speaking in a Language You Recognize
Sometimes life feels very ordinary. Laundry. Emails. Grocery lists. Appointments. Dinner. Trying to remember why you walked into the kitchen.
And then something happens that makes you stop.
A bird lands unusually close and stays longer than expected. A song you have not heard in years plays at the exact moment you are thinking about someone. You wake from a dream so vivid that it follows you all day.
A word, image, number, or idea keeps appearing until you finally think, Okay. I see you. Maybe it means something. Maybe it does not.
But there are moments when life feels like it is speaking in symbols, and I have become increasingly interested in what happens when we simply pay attention. Not because I believe every coincidence is a supernatural telegram.
Sometimes a cardinal is just a cardinal. But sometimes the things we notice tell us something about what is already stirring inside us.
And that feels very Rooted in Magic to me.
We Have Always Looked for Meaning
Humans have always searched for meaning in the world around us. We have watched the stars, studied dreams, noticed the seasons, listened to birds, told stories about the moon, and wondered whether certain moments were trying to tell us something. Long before we had notifications buzzing in our pockets every twelve seconds, people paid attention to what happened around them.
A change in the wind mattered. The arrival of certain birds meant something. Dreams were remembered and discussed. Stories were passed down about signs, omens, luck, timing, and the mysterious ways one thing seemed connected to another. Of course, not every old belief was true.
But I think there is something worth recovering from the practice itself. Attention. Wonder. The willingness to say, That was interesting.
For me, that is part of what it means to be Rooted in Magic—to stay grounded enough to use good sense while still leaving room for mystery. We are very quick to dismiss things we cannot explain. Maybe we do not always have to.
Sometimes a Symbol Is Really a Mirror
The interesting thing about symbols is that they do not necessarily need to come from somewhere outside of us to have meaning. Sometimes they simply reveal what is happening within us. Imagine that you suddenly begin noticing birds everywhere. They were probably there before.
What changed? Maybe you did. Perhaps you are craving freedom. Maybe you are thinking about home, migration, change, or what it means to trust yourself enough to leave one place and fly toward another. The bird does not have to be carrying a mystical message for the moment to matter. It may simply have caught the attention of a part of you that was ready to see it.
That is why symbolism in everyday life can be so powerful. A symbol gives shape to something we have not yet found words for. And perhaps that is another way we become Rooted in Magic—by noticing what keeps tugging at our attention and becoming curious about why.
Then There Are the Strange Little Coincidences
And still. Some things are just…odd.
You think about someone you have not spoken to in months, and five minutes later they text. A question has been rolling around in your mind, and then a sentence in a book seems to answer it. The same unusual phrase appears in three different places within a week. You decide you need encouragement, climb into the car, and the exact song you needed begins playing.
Coincidence? Probably. Possibly. Who knows?
I do not think we have to settle the question. There is room between “everything is a sign from the universe” and “nothing means anything unless it can be scientifically measured.” That middle space is where wonder lives.
Perhaps the coincidence does not predict your future or tell you what decision to make. It can still remind you to stop. Notice. Ask yourself why it caught your attention.
That alone can be meaningful.
Dreams Have Their Own Language
Dreams are another strange little doorway. Most disappear before breakfast. Others stay.
You wake with the feeling of them still wrapped around you. A person from years ago appears. You return to a childhood house. There is water, a road, a locked door, a familiar voice.
Hours later, you are still thinking about it.
I am less interested in dream dictionaries that insist a staircase means one specific thing and more interested in asking, What did it mean to me?
How did the dream feel? What memory did it stir? What part stayed with me? A dream may be nothing more than the brain sorting through its overflowing junk drawer.
Even then, perhaps what floats to the top deserves a little curiosity.
Songs Know How to Find Us
Music may be my favorite version of this. A song can hold an entire season of your life.
Three notes, and suddenly you are seventeen. Another chorus takes you back to the first apartment, the long drive home, your children when they were small, a person you loved, or a version of yourself you thought you had forgotten.
Memories do this too. They surface without warning.
You smell something familiar and remember your grandmother’s kitchen. A phrase someone says brings back a conversation from twenty years ago. You suddenly think of a place you have not visited in years.
Why that memory? Why now? Maybe there is no grand reason.
But sometimes an old memory returns because the woman you are now understands something the woman you were then could not. There are unseen threads connecting our lives. Most of the time, we only recognize them looking backward.
To me, being Rooted in Magic means honoring those threads without needing to explain every single one of them.
Pay Attention Without Giving Away Your Power
There is one thing I think matters when we talk about signs from the universe, intuition, dreams, or meaningful coincidences.
A sign should invite reflection, not surrender your judgment. You do not have to make a major life decision because you saw three butterflies and heard Fleetwood Mac at the grocery store.
Please use your good sense. Magic and common sense can coexist quite happily. Instead, let a repeating symbol become a question.
What has been lingering in my thoughts lately? Where does my attention keep being drawn? Is there something I’m quietly avoiding? Deep down, what do I already know to be true?
Often, the most important message is not hidden in the symbol. It is hidden in your reaction to it.
Rooted in Magic Means Staying Curious
This is one of the things I want Rooted in Magic to hold space for this October.
Mystery without gullibility.
Intuition without fear.
Wonder without needing certainty.
There are things we may never fully explain—the uncanny timing, the dream that stays with us, the song that arrives when we need it, the bird that appears again and again.
Maybe some of them are meaningful coincidences.
Perhaps some are simply ordinary things made extraordinary because we were finally paying attention.
Either way, I do not think we have to solve every mystery.
Sometimes it is enough to notice.
To wonder.
To smile when the same little symbol appears once more.
That, too, is what it means to be Rooted in Magic—not searching frantically for signs, but becoming more awake to your own life.
And quietly asking: What is this helping me see?
